Melanie has worked in television for almost 30 years, starting at Southern Television before directing at Thames Television where she gained her first commission with a six part children's outside broadcast series Megamania. Melanie then went on to produce and direct the multi-award winning Wish You Were Here..? In 1992 she launched the Sky Travel Channel and series produced the new 45-part travel show Great Escapes filming all around the world. She also launched the Channel 5 live weekend youth programme The Mag presented by Josie Darby. Later that year at Meridian her idea Under Offer was commissioned by ITV and four series of this property game show were made. She went on to become Head of Development at Live TV where she obtained their first terrestrial commission - Lie Detector, a series of 20 programmes. She then became the Series Producer of the live award winning children's programme Top Ten of Everything for HTV in 2000 and then moved to BBC Bristol where she launched their first BBC daytime offering Bargain Hunt which became an overnight success and won the NTA best daytime award. She then became editor of the live daily one hour make over show Housecall and then returned to Bargain Hunt to take it into prime time. In 2003 her auction property show idea Homes Under The Hammer was commissioned by the BBC. Homes Under The Hammer has now made over 200 shows in 7 series and continues to be a ratings winner in daytime.
