Synopsis:
Atlas is a landmark television project by Discovery Channel. It is a signature series of two-hour HD experiential journeys through individual countries across the globe. Spectacle, splendor, surprise and story are hallmarks of the programs as they explore the world. Each one is a magic carpet ride of stunning photography, cutting edge special effects, and stories that put the viewer into the heart of the country and its people.

India Atlas is the story of an immensely diverse nation – the home of at least three of the world’s great religions and a whole sequence of empires and states, each with their own spectacular architectural and cultural legacies. In consequence, this can seem a nation of chaos and almost overwhelming contrasts – most dramatically between rich and poor. Although it appears to be a country of great tolerance, it masks deep-rooted conventions and prejudices: the position of women, or the place of the lowest ranks of the 2000-year-old caste system. As India strives to join the leading edge of the world’s powers, those conventions are coming under pressure, forcing deep shifts and changes within Indian society.
